Thursday is our last chance to work out rough spots. Overall we are playing very well. Just a few thoughts as we prepare for the week ahead:

1. Please watch your conductors. We are playing a lot of medleys and therefore a lot of transitions in tempo, style, and meter. Look up and be prepared for often sudden changes.

2. Keep the melody in mind, and make sure you are at an appropriate dynamic level for your role. Clearly if you are the melody then that part needs to be brought out. However, if you are a countermelody or harmony part or rhythmic ostinato that part needs to be at a dynamic level that allows the melody to shine through.

3. Remember, DYNAMICS ARE RELATIVE. A forte in one piece might not be so loud in another piece. Play at a dynamic level appropriate to the style and mood of the piece. The same goes for articulations. I’ve said many times that a staccato means short and separated, but a staccato may be longer in one piece than it is in another. Yeah, it can be confusing, but making these fine adjustments can make or break a piece.

4. Have a pencil at rehearsal so that you can MARK the changes being made, and so that you can remember the change later. I mark my music all the time because as much as I try I just don’t remember everything all the time.
